This voluntary standard provides specifications for new construction and remodeling of residential inground swimming pools and includes design, equipment, operation, and installation. This standard applies to permanently installed residential inground swimming pools intended for noncommercial use as a swimming pool by not more than three owner families and their guests and exceeding 24 in (61 cm) in water depth. It is intended to meet the needs for incorporation into national or regional building codes, and is also for adoption by state and/or local municipalities as a local code or ordinance.
The Chair of the PHTA-5 Standard Writing Committee, Adam Alstott, notes major revisions include adding a non-diving section for the building of residential pools. This section will help the industry design with clarity, as in the past diving tolerances were being applied to non-diving pools. Other revisions include egress requirements in vanishing edge catch basins.
Stakeholders: Pool builders, code officials, installers, and consumers.
Current Version: ANSI/PHTA/ICC-5 2025 American National Standard for Residential Inground Swimming Pools
