As part of the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance’s core purpose to promote safe and healthy pool and hot tub environments for people to share enjoyable aquatic experiences, we support the following organizations.
Step Into Swim
Unintentional drowning is the leading cause of death in children aged 1-4 years. From 2005-2014, there were an average of 3,536 fatal unintentional drownings (non-boating related) annually in the United States — about ten deaths per day. An additional 332 people died each year from drowning in boating-related incidents.
Learning to swim means much more than learning strokes; it is learning water survival skills, water safety, and developing comfort in the water.
The Step Into Swim™ Campaign is a 10-year initiative to create 1 million more swimmers. By donating to this campaign, you can make a difference in the world, help create more swimmers, and grow the aquatic industry!
National Water Safety Month
In recognition of the popularity of swimming and other water-related recreational activities in the United States, and the resulting need for ongoing public education on safer water practices, the month of May has been named National Water Safety Month.
National Water Safety Month is an annual awareness campaign coordinated by the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance with support from the American Red Cross, National Recreation and Park Association and World Waterpark Association and is celebrated through educational programs, public service announcements, governmental proclamations, and the distribution of water-safety themed materials.
To improve pool and spa safety, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) launched Pool Safely: Simple Steps to Save Lives, a national public education campaign to reduce childhood drownings, submersion injuries and entrapments.
The campaign is a call-to-action for consumers and industry to adopt proven water safety steps and join a national conversation about pool and spa safety by sharing best practices and other life-saving information.
Pool Safely carries out the provisions of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act (P&SS Act), federal legislation mandating new requirements for public pools and spas, including a public information campaign.
Healthy and Safe Swimming Week
Healthy and Safe Swimming Week highlights the roles that swimmers, parents, aquatics and beach staff, residential pool owners, and public health officials play in preventing disease outbreaks, drowning, and pool chemical injuries. Every year, PHTA works with the CDC and the American Chemistry Council to focus on a different topic for Healthy and Safe Swimming Week.
Building Safety Month
Up to 785 million people worldwide lack access to a vital resource – clean water. PHTA has partnered with the International Code Council to promote the adoption and enforcement of up-to-date building and plumbing codes to increase the availability of clean water globally.
