POOL & HOT TUB ALLIANCE ANNOUNCES REVISION OF APSP-6 RESIDENTIAL PORTABLE SPAS STANDARD; CALLS FOR CHANGE REQUESTS AND COMMITTEE PARTICIPATION

(Alexandria, Va.) — The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA), the trade association representing the swimming pool, hot tub, and spa industry, is pleased to announce the upcoming review and revision of ANSI/APSP/ICC-6 2013 (R2023) American National Standard for Residential Portable Spas and Swim Spas, and calls for participation in the new PHTA-6 Standard Writing Committee (SWC).

The PHTA-6 SWC will revise the standard, which provides recommended minimum guidelines for the design, equipment, installation, and use of residential portable spas and swim spas. The standard is also intended to assist local jurisdictions and other regulatory bodies in the development and promulgation of criteria for residential portable spas and swim spas.

The SWC will meet under the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) periodic maintenance process to review and consider revisions to the standard. Subject matter experts (SMEs) who would like to serve on the SWC must be willing and able to actively participate in the language drafting process and have a working understanding of the current standard. The anticipated timeline for this project is approximately one year.

All stakeholders, including designers, builders, and manufacturers of residential portable spas, exercise spas, and hot tubs; equipment and component manufacturers; building code officials; and consumers are invited to apply to serve on the PHTA-6 SWC. PHTA seeks to establish a diverse SWC, ensuring a reasonable balance between all interest categories, individuals, and organizations. Some priority will be given to applicants who have experience using, applying, and enforcing the APSP-6 2013 (R2023) Standard. Read more about how to participate in the process, or complete the application to serve as a PHTA-6 committee member here.

Interested parties who may not be SMEs or active users of the standard are encouraged to attend meetings as observers throughout the revision process.

Stakeholders are also invited to submit change requests to the existing APSP-6 Standard for inclusion in the revised standard. These change requests will be reviewed by the PHTA-6 SWC. Change requests can be submitted here and must be submitted by August 31, 2025, to be considered during this revision cycle.

Completed SWC application forms must be submitted to PHTA by July 11, 2025. For more information, visit the Participate in the Process page, phta.org/standards, or contact Blake Pavlik, PHTA Director of Standards, at bpavlik@phta.org.
